AURA was formed in order to promote greater knowledge, understanding and use of Reiki in the wider community, and in doing so help Heal the World. Our purposes and directions are, for the benefit of the members and wider community to encourage worldwide, whole person growth, healing and wellbeing through Reiki by:
-
Honouring the Usui Reiki tradition whilst actively fostering and advancing Reiki to ensure respect for its practise and teaching
-
Provide members opportunities, encouragement and proven techniques for healing, personal development and growth, and a forum for information, support and friendship
-
Asserting and maintaining professional standards of education and practice for Usui Reiki and granting professional certification to members who meet these standards
-
Being recognized throughout the wider community as a leading professional Reiki Association; a self-regulated body with a unified voice
-
Building effective relationships with other organizations and policy makers to promote understanding, credibility and acceptance of Reiki.
This basically means that we would like to heal the world with Reiki in every way; emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. We would also like to offer guidance and support to other Reiki people; a forum for interested parties to place their views and a respected body for those who practice Reiki professionally. We propose to do this by offering support and guidance to members in utilising their Reiki gift and generally in life skills. Having regular events to bring members together in friendship is one of our commitments to you.
History of AURA
AURA was the brainchild of Betty Thuan, who approached several people concerning the possibility of setting up an association in early 2002. Over the course of the next year an association was set up with a steering council whilst we decided upon the aims, constitution and requirements of the association. The main aim of AURA is to Heal the World, specifically by practising and teaching Reiki, and channelling energy to help heal ourselves, others and the world in general. If it wasn't for Betty's vision AURA would not exist.
AURA also wishes to especially thank Tara Bulum, who as secretary on the steering council worked ceaselessly on organising AURA, getting everything running, taking copious notes and coming up with most of the artwork, including what eventually became AURA's logo. AURA also wishes to thank the Asia Pacific Reiki Institute and the Firebird Centre for providing somewhere to meet and hold events.
All members of the initial steering committee provided a great deal of time, energy and devotion to get AURA up and running. In alphabetical order the committee included Tara Bulum, Bruce Calder, Peter K. Campbell, Paul Ribet, Alain Romary, Eleanor Schroeder, Stuart Steinberg, Sylvia Stollery, Betty Thuan and Bob Thuan.
On the 10th August 2003 the association was officially launched to (nearly) coincide with the birthday of Dr Usui on the 15th August, which we call Foundation Day, as an incorporated Australian Association (registration number A0043255J).
In August 2004 on Foundation Day this website was launched for AURA.
In August 2005 AURA found out about a move by the federal government, under the aegis of the CSHISC (Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council Ltd.), to institute practitioner standards in various fields of complementary medicine, including Reiki. Since then the board of AURA has worked ceaselessly to ensure that the interests of our members will be served by any forms of standardisation.
In May 2006 AURA helped establish and joined CARO - the Council of Australian
Reiki Organisations, which will provide registration, accreditation, and
standards maintenance for the previously unregulated Reiki profession in
Australia. See
this
press release for more information, and Reiki Links of Interest for the
website.
On the 1st June 2007 AURA became an Australian Registered Body (number 125 732 121), as defined by ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission).
